Starting a small business can feel like a lot. There are all the permits, premises, and paperwork to handle – and chances are you’ll be doing it with little, if any, staff.

But there is at least one aspect of running a business that won’t take too much effort to do yourself. It will engage a creative flair, and you’ve already done it to an extent your whole life: the marketing.

Marketing in the internet age is a lot more accessible, affordable, and effective than mainstream media. You will reach who you need to with less effort and a minimal price tag. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at our guide to online marketing.

Understand the data

The thing that separates digital media marketing from traditional media marketing is the data that is collected as your business grows. With this data you’ll be able to improve your marketing campaign by targeting the demographic that is most reacting, see where they are coming from and see what they are buying.

You will also be able to make yourself more visible and easier to find with things like SEO, keyword research and affiliate marketing.

However, it’s not as accessible as other aspects of digital marketing. The rest you will have seen as a consumer yourself, and therefore you will have picked up the basics, whereas the data will take some research.

Luckily, this is no tightly held secret. You can sign up for a subscription class like Skillshare and LinkedIn Learning for a course on the basics of digital marketing and see more eyes move to your social media and websites, and therefore, your business.

Build your business website

A business website is important to any business. Not only is it the first point of contact for any new customers looking for your information, but the state it’s in will let users gauge how professional they think you are.

The sad fact is that there are a lot of scams on the internet, and the first thing a customer is going to do to determine if your business is a scam is to look at the state of your website.

For example, if you were running a website for online sports betting, your fun graphics, clear layout and wide range of games and content would express that you have put effort into your site, therefore it’s less likely to disappear once the customer confirms their checkout.

You will also want to keep your website free of glitches to avoid problems when customers are making transactions. If a customer can’t get a page to load while they are in the checkout process, you will probably lose a sale.

There are loads of web building sites online, so you don’t need to be a genius in coding, complete with templates to make things simple. To create your website, the one thing you do need is imagination to bring it to fruition.

Elevate your social media

Social media marketing isn’t what it used to be. Your users are becoming accustomed to what is an ad, and generally, an ad is a graphic for a sale posted to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and a hastily written caption.

Social media users are well aware of that and not giving it their time. What is worth their time is quality content. Users won’t care if they are looking at an ad if the ad is worth looking at.

This doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy the latest camera. That’s an element of quality content but not the most important. Instead, look for ways to showcase your business and brand while entertaining your audience. Show behind the scenes clips, demonstrations of your products, how they’re made, reviews, etc. to show what your brand is and what it stands for.
