Dominic Morin-Proulx : Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning To Create Profit-maximizing Software Solutions

HookMotion utilizes the latest technological developments in computer vision and machine learning to create profit-maximizing software solutions that are innovating the global casino gaming industry.

In short, we create AI driven solutions that help casinos better analyze and refine their table game operations (Blackjack, Baccarat, Roulette … any game played with physical cards and chips).

Success for us at HookMotion is defined by how far we are able to extend the boundaries of what our clients think is possible.

Tell us about yourself?

Myself along with our two other co-founders have a diverse background in multiple engineering disciplines – both in-school and hands-on experience. We knew that we could use our unique blend of niche experiences to develop something new and innovative, and we set off in search of opportunity.

In 2019, we were approached by a gaming corporation looking to be on the forefront of technology. They explained their pain points and we immediately fell in love with the issue and the industry, dedicating our careers to creating a solution. The rest is history!

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Great question! I was actually asked this recently.

I would definitely tell myself to not be afraid of debt. Knowing how and when to leverage debt properly is an invaluable skill.

In the early stages of starting a new venture, time is one of your best assets. Leveraging debt can allow you to focus your attention on launching the business forward rather than worrying about resources. Spending less time stressing over funding and more time on business development would have been a much better use of such a valuable asset.

What problem does your business solve?

Right now we aim to solve a longstanding problem for casino operators – the inability to accurately and autonomously track in-depth information about their table-game operations.

Mechanical in nature, table-game data has historically been recorded by hand, which is tedious and allows for human error.

By introducing automation through the use of computer vision and machine learning technology, HookMotion makes these problems a thing of the past.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

HookMotion was created as a result of casino operators’ constant pursuit of optimization. Although most people think of casinos as well-oiled machines, in actuality there is a lot of room to increase efficiency and decrease error on the gaming floor.

For example, one thing that inspires us specifically is the hundreds and hundreds of underutilized overhead security cameras found in every casino. No surveillance team can review all of that footage manually, those cameras are begging to reach their full potential with computer vision!

What is your magic sauce?

Our magic sauce is made delicious by our unique blend of computer vision and machine learning algorithms that allow us to seamlessly integrate with casinos existing infrastructure.

They put the ease of automation and the power of real-time AI driven optimization recommendations into the hands of casino operators in a way never seen before.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

By 2027, we plan to have expanded our operations globally, automating table game management in any and all casinos that are open to adopting the latest and greatest that technology has to offer.

But we won’t stop there – Beyond that, we aim to work collaboratively with our clients in order to identify different areas of the industry that could be better optimized by our computer vision and machine learning capabilities.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

I’d say our biggest challenge comes from the fact that we operate on the cutting edge of technology.

Because our solutions are so innovative (especially in an industry as old-school as casino gaming), we have to work extra hard to overcome the misinformation and stigmas associated with such new and advanced tech.

We fully understand the concerns involved with the use of AI for data and business intelligence, and we have worked very hard to ensure our clients of our commitment to safe data practices.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

If you’re in any way involved in land-based casino gaming – join us for a collaborative conversation!
