Mona Girgis
Country Directors or Coordinators, Laos of Plan International
Starting her career as a midwife and nurse, Mona worked in indigenous Australian communities and was a health services manager before embarking on a career in development and humanitarian programming. Mona has worked with several NGOs since 1999, including in Tanzania, Pakistan, Iran, Timor-Leste and most recently Laos. Mona’s academic background includes an undergraduate degree in politics, a masters of nursing studies and a doctorate in public health, from Flinders University (Australia). Having arrived in Laos in late 2009, she has already seen very rapid social and economic changes taking place. Even in the most remote districts in the country, changes are being seen. There is a real sense of opening up and exploration of what is possible. Young people can see different opportunities and they are engaging with them.

Debora Cobar
Country Directors or Coordinators, Guatemala of Plan International
Débora Cobar is Plan Guatemala’s Director since 2010. Her broad experience in children’s rights has facilitated the alignment of Plan Guatemala programs with the principles and by-laws of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Before working for Plan, she was the Advisor to the First Lady on the Rights of the Child between 1994 and 1996, and then she was the Prosecutor for the Rights of the child at the Solicitor General’s office in Guatemala, from 1998 to 2000. Her academic education includes a career as Medical Doctor and Surgeon, with a subsequent specialization in the Rights of the Child and a Master Degree on Social Development with Emphasis on Decentralization and Local Power. Débora started her work with Plan in 2000 as an Advisor on the Rights of the Child in Central America and the Caribbean, by coordinating work with 6 countries of the region. She represented Plan at the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly in the beginning of the decade of the 2000’s to discuss the status of the rights of children globally. She is a great champion of the Por Ser Niña campaign and has strongly promoted gender equality as a cross-cutting theme in every program and as part of the work done with staff members. Her work has enhanced Plan International Guatemala partnerships and its ability to work with other organizations and thus accomplish important goals related to key issues such as child malnutrition, child protection, the registration of births and the participation of boys, girls and adolescents in the development of their communities. Débora took up the challenge to lead support efforts to address emergencies in areas outside of program interventions by Plan in Guatemala.Débora has the vision to start the process of local fund collection to support the programs which are implemented by Plan International Guatemala.

Brechtje Lith

Brechtje Kalksma – van Lith holds a Masters in Public Administration and an Advanced Master in Development Studies. When you start your career in the corporate sector (KPMG), soon found his true passion in international development, which has been working for the past 15 years. Before joining Plan International Brechtje held positions as a consultant, facilitator, Program Manager and Country Director in a number of human rights organizations and development, among which are Amnesty International and War Child Holland. His work has continually focused on programming for the fulfillment of children’s rights and welfare. In 2007 and 2008 he published articles and co-author of psychosocial interventions for children affected by war. Brechtje has worked and lived in South Africa, Tanzania, Eritrea, Colombia and Sierra Leone. In the last three years has been Country Director of Plan Dominican Republic.

Damien Queally
West Africa Deputy Regional Director of Plan International
Before joining the West Africa Regional Office in early 2013, Damien worked as Programme Director at Plan Ireland for five years, which has a focus on projects in West Africa. Prior to his work in Plan, Damien worked for the Irish NGO, GOAL, based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger and Darfur in various positions from Area Manager to Assistant and Acting Country Director for a period of over four years.
