Tell us about yourself?
I started in newspaper in 2000 and spent a decade in the industry. Around 2011 after seeing the rise of social media I decided to get out of newspaper and start my own social media agency. But first I wanted to get some experience. In 2011 there were no courses you could take, it was the wild west. Sunshine Village Ski Resort in Banff, Alberta had a major social media crisis and decided to get serious about social media. This was a perfect place to get experience. They had a great product with a battered brand. I was there for a year and a half and won them 4 major social major awards for their social media.
In 2013 I started my agency and a year later, in 2014, we were named by Clutch.co as a top 20 social media agency in the world and have held that title every year since.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Never buy a boat! lol But on a business level, it has been a difficult couple years under COVID for us and many other small businesses. We focus as always on our own digital marketing strategy. Not sure if I could have done anything differently.
What problem does your business solve?
Clients come to us solve a few issues. They know they need to be on social media but:
- don’t have the time needed to devote to it.
- don’t have the skills to do social media effectively.
We have been in business since 2013 and have learned many tricks, tips, skills and experience along the way. We act as a client’s social media department at a cost that is less than the price of a minimum wage employee, but with the skills, experience and coverage of 7 days a week including holidays.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
I’ve always said, find something you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life. I’ve been in marketing since 2000 and this was a natural progression from newspaper.
What is your magic sauce?
I’ve been offered lots of money to teach our magic sauce and I’ve declined every time. What sets us apart from our competition is the years we’ve been in business, experience, performance and our verified testimonials.
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
To continue to be a top performing social media agency in the world for our clients. Capturing the POWER of SOCIAL MEDIA for the benefit of our clients.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
Hiring the right people. It’s really important that we also hire those that are the best, or strive to be the best. It is for this reason we have a very comprehensive hiring process.
